I asked Bruce Polchies to install a fire door for my downstairs one bedroom unit. He did a horrible job, used the wrong products, had his wife helpe him and she has no carpentry training. We also had issues with scheduling. He would say he would be there at a certain time and I wouldnt hear from him for a day or two. This happened a few times.

My company was hired by ******* ******* to install a fire door for her basement apartment. She informed me over the phone that she had already purchased the materials for the job. After a visit to the residence to do an assessment, I found there was still materials required to do the job adequately this included a Lockset (doorknob) as well as sealant for the jamb. I informed the client and she assured me I would be reimbursed in entirety for any additional costs incurred During the job. There were a few scheduling changes that posed an inconvenience due to working hours of her or the tenant. These issues were quickly resolved. After she was billed for the job (invoiced for materials and labour) she gave me a date that she would be able make the payment as it was the day she got paid. On that day she did not make the payment, nor did she contact me till a day or so later to inform me that she would not make the payment claiming “the job was not done properly” and has not responded to any communication to date. As a journeyman carpenter and contractor, I can guarantee the price was reasonable, and know for fact materials were to spec. And job was up to code.

Regarding the claims of the client about work done: We’ll start at the materials; All materials used met or exceeded provisioned NBC Fire codes for residential and commercial construction standards. The door provided by the client was rated 20mins as stamped by the manufacturer. Materials provided by my company include commercial lockset (doorknob) with a class 1 or grade A rating which meets commercial standards and exceeds residential requirements (Imposed cost approx. 110 before tax). Whereas the door was designated for a dwelling as an entry door and not passage due it being for an apartment in the client's basement, the door jamb was sealed with a low expansion flame retardant foam (see codes and ratings: ICC-ES-ESR-1961, ASTM E84 & E814, UL1715). The MSDS for the product is available on the DOW Chemical company website. To further protect from potential fires an elastomeric (paintable) fire rated silicone was used to seal the trim around the door.( see codes and standards: ASTM E814 / UL 1479 and ASTM E1966 / UL 2079) MSDS for this product is available on DAP Products Inc website. (Both products used to seal the door were approximately 35 dollars before tax). The duration of the job was longer than expected  as we were in the middle of residential multi dwelling renovation contract over 100 Kms away from the site in reference. This slightly impacted scheduling on my end however the client was well informed throughout. My wife, as mentioned by the client does in fact have extensive carpentry experience, is an indentured carpentry apprentice under my company and my license as a journeyman/ Red seal endorsed carpenter. She also has extensive post secondary education. and was more than capable to help and could have completed the task by herself if necessary. It is unfortunate that ******* having zero carpentry knowledge or experience was misled to believe the job was done improperly and was coerced  into hiring, and paying a second individual. None the less; Professionally, I stand by the amount billed as it’s fair, reflective of hours worked, and materials purchased by my company.

In conclusion, I am ready, willing and plan to pursue further escalation through collections on this matter.

      Sincerely,

I am rejecting this response because:

If you look at the pictures I initially sent you can easily see the job was not done properly. I'm not sure why anyone would pay for that.

In response to complaint, regarding the scope of work requested by ******* *******. Installation of a fire door: The purpose of a fire door is that in the event of a fire in the respective dwelling that it prevents the spread of fire to other combustible materials in the rest of the building. Additionally, the other materials used to seal the opening provide an additional safety factor in the event of a fire and are required by the national building code. As well, the labour and material cost associated with the installation is coupled with guarantee that in the event or fire the door will perform its design function preventing the spread of fire to the rest of the building. Again, the door was installed to spec and in accordance to provisioned building and fire codes.

      Sincerely,

      ***** ********* RSE.
