Lee Hoffman Roofing applied a new coating to the roof back in November 2022. Within three months of the new coating four substantial roof leaks have appeared which required of removing sheetrock from the master bedroom. The new roof also has 100's of large blisters appearing which Lee Hoffman first claimed was due to a bad batch of coating material they received last summer. On March 1 2023 Lee Hoffman decided to cut nearly 100 blisters out of the roof in 53 degree weather 8 hours prior to the large rain and snow storm. The following morning it looked like milk was draining off the roof. All of the patches had failed and had water trapped in them. Around March 15 2023 another leak appeared which required removal of more sheetrock. The next day the roof was inspected and a large number of cracks had appeared in the new coating along with more blisters. Lee Hoffman applied a coating over the cracks which already had water trapped in them and also stated that they now believe the roof failure was not due to bad coating material but from old tar paper on the roof with when it gets old and shrinks. We had the roof inspected and discovered that the roof didn't appear to have been properly cleaned and moisture removed prior to Lee Hoffman applying the new coating. At this point we have to try and find another roofing contractor in an attempt to repair or replace the current roof which overall condition has deteriorated every time Lee Hoffman came out to work on it.

      Business response

      05/03/2023

      Good afternoon,

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to complaint 19861387. As always, there are two sides to every story, and this is true in the case of work performed on the consumer’s home as well.  What was not mentioned by the consumer was that when the work was done in 2022, we recommended a full reroof or a restoration system to the previous homeowner, as the roof is over 20 years old. The homeowner at the time declined a reroof and asked for a recoat.  The previous homeowner also failed to inform us of an ongoing leak, which did not allow us to address that specific area during the recoat.

We performed the work, but being that the roof is over 20 years old, it is not immune to further problems.  The underlying roof is the issue; coating is meant to reflect and protect, but it cannot fix an old roof nor seal, as roof coating is actually permeable. The consumer contends that we did not properly clean the surface prior to our coat causing blisters. Upon review of cut-out blisters, we found that the blisters happened between the original roof and original coating. Our coating application had properly adhered to the previous coat. Despite this, our intention has been to repair the leaks to the best of our ability.  We were in the middle of working on these issues with the consumer, and we had even come up with a plan of action once the weather warmed up and the roof dried out, which the consumer verbally agreed to. Before the weather permitted us to do the repairs and recoat, the consumer filed a complaint with the BBB and the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. Throughout this whole process, we have actively tried to work with consumer, and we happily welcomed the Registrar’s guidance and mediation to resolve the issue.  As of today’s date, we have had an on-site meeting with the consumer and a representative with the Registrar, and we are in the process of coming up with a solution that is satisfactory to both parties.  We look forward to the matter being resolved.

      Thank you,

      Spencer Henson
