On January 3, 2024, ***************** from Westwood Books called me to say that he wants to market my book INNOCENT TEARS by distributing to ****** and *****. He explained that at least 300 paperback books should be distributed. Each paperback book costs $3.50 and 300 books totally cost me $1050. He charged my card for $1050. However, he suggested that distributing my book in hardcover would be more attractive. I agreed with him. Therefore, he said that to change 300 paperback books to hardcover books, I need to pay $200 more. So he canceled $1050 and now he charged my card for $1250. He also told me that the money from the sales of the books goes to me. While I was very happy with this deal, when I received the contract, there was nothing that he had told me. When I saw his contract, and meanwhile I learned that those books were only for display, not for sale, I Immediately rejected his deal and asked ***************** to refund my money. In the meantime, I wrote them a rejection letter and demanded an immediate refund. Although *****************, *****, and ******, the three of them promised to have my money refunded, they have still kept the money without receiving any service from them. I found Westwood Books publishing unfair, unprofessional and unreliable.Review from Yolanda M

Westwood Books Publishing charged me $6,000 to market my books, pocketed the money, and did absolutely nothing. Now they are declaring bankruptcy and working under another name, ***************** **** to scam more people. I even paid for a Certificate of Copyright that they never processed. They have an office in *******, *******. There is no transparency.Review from Tim B

Based on all of the complaints against Westwood Books, I have little to add. However I published through Westwood Books and was promised in an email that I would only be charged the printing costs on the books I ordered and those ordered by bookstores. After two years I am still waiting for royalties and on the few occasions that I have got through to a live person to order books, I am told that I will be charged the cover price for my books. I informed the service rep that I am only to be charge the printing cost and he informed me that that has changed. In spite of having to pay full cover price for my book and not receiving any royalties, I can't seem to get anybody on the phone to get information from or even order books for myself or the bookstores that want to carry my book.Review from Mary G

At first, I did not understand the process that Westwood utilized; however, with the exceptional help of Sheila Miranda, the process was streamlined. The final product of my memoir was beautiful and the cover exceptional.Review from Susan K

From *******: Westwoodbooks published a second edition of my book and I was told it was shown at 3 book fairs- although I have no proof. To their credit, Westwood did set up a website and had my book reviewed. My complaint, however, is that because there is no transparency, I have no idea how many books have sold.
Repeated requests to find our how many of my books have sold are ignored. Although I do not know the exact number, I have sold books, yet have not received any of the 100% royalty fees promised. Another complaint I have is high pressure sales tactics. After much pressure, I was asked to provide the title of another bookproject I had been considering and for which I paid $***. Based on the details discussed above, however, I would never consider publishing a second book with Westwoodbooks publishing and would like this downpayment refunded. Let me repeat: I want to know how many books of Budaniel and Simba the Toy Lion have sold; I am requesting payment of royalties and a refund of $*** before I find another publisher. These are reasons why, in good conscience, I could or would- recommend WestwoodBooks Publishing to any other author. Westwoodbookspublishing business practice by which they take advantage of authors' desire to have their books published and marketed, refusing to inform about number of books sold and failure to pay royalties-- this lack of transparency, and thus, of defrauding heir authors-are reasons why I am seeking legal action unless they resolve my grievances listed above and do so immediatelyWestwood Books Publishing Response

Dear Susan Kapenke,
I don't know why you're asking again for a refund for the $699 payment you made for your second book. We already filed a chargeback last June 8, 2021 and the money was credited to your bank since. Please review your bank statement and you should be able to confirm it.
When it comes to your royalties, we already sent you a check last Januart 22nd. Again, we don't understand where this allegations are coming from.
Lastly, the book fairs where your book were registered were all cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is nobody's fauilt. Given the situation, your book is automatically listed for the 2022 list of book shows.
Please do not falsey acuse us of no transparancy when we done everything on our end. Please heck your facts Susan.
Thank you!Customer Response

Regarding reimbursement of the down payment of a second book project, let me remind Westwoodbooks publishing that it was not they who refunded my money, but rather my credit card company removed the charge after I filed a complaint. My mistake was giving in to the high-pressure tactics of the Westwood marketing rep to withdraw my challenge. I did so, and thus, the credit card company re-applied the charge to my account. .
Let me reiterate: After repeated requests, Westwood has never told me how many of my books have sold-and I have sold books--
There is no transparency. Westwood has not sent me any royalty checks although they said they did, above. They are defrauding me by lying to me....
Because of the pandemic and thus, because no book fairs were held, then my money should be reimbursed.
I will repeat: Authors who are looking for a publishing and marketing company would be well-advised in carefully considering my complaints.
There are other means of redress which I am pursuing.Westwood Books Publishing Response

Dear Susan Kapenke,
You said it yourself. You filed a chargeback thus resulting to you receving your money. When your bank processed it, they already took the money from us. We no longer have your money so we cannot refund you anything.
Book Fairs were cancelled due to the pandemic. There proof that they were. Please check their website to see for yourself. Again, Ms. Kapanke, marketing services doesn't guarantee you book sales. People who promise you guaranteed book sales are the shady ones.
We are not stopping you to pursue other means to market your book. What we can assure is that those book fairs are already a lock for 2022.
