BBB Complaint# ********
The customer *********************** ************************************************************), purchased a used 2016 ***** Colorado 3.6L V6 engine on 4/12/23. The engine was compression tested and oil pressure tested on our test bench that morning before it was delivered. The engine was delivered to their shop the same day. We provide a six-month unlimited mileage warranty on the engine.
We were contacted on 4/21/23 by ************ of ***********************, stating there was an issue with the engine. ************ let us know that cylinder # 4 had a misfire. They had taken the car to ******************* (************************************* ******, ** *****) to diagnose the engine.
We spoke with ****** in the service department **************. **************** let us know what they had found. They used a borescope and found that something was dropped into the intake valve area and that the intake valve was being held open from the debris that fell into the engine. **************** explained that he believed something got sucked into the engine when the *********************** transferred over the manifolds and accessories.
We explained to ************ at *********************** that the Chevrolet dealership had found something impeding the intake valve from closing. We advised ************ to get the car back and check the engine. He could probably remove this dropped part in the engine and be okay. ************ ended up removing the engine for us to inspect.
We picked up the engine on 5/8/23 for inspection. Once we got the engine back here and on our test bench, we found the cause of the problem. When ************ swapped over the intake manifold from the original damaged customer's engine, broken parts were stuck in the intake manifold from the previous engine failure. The intake manifold needed to be cleaned out before being swapped. Once the engine started, it sucked this broken part out of the intake manifold and into the engine. This part then caused the intake valve not to close. The stuck part then caused the rocker arm for the valve to pop out of place. The intake valve bent due to the piston coming in contact with it.
The engine was not sold in this condition. We tested the engine that morning before sending it to ***********. So we took photos of the broken part that was found in the engine. We have included these photos in our response so you can see them yourself. We sent the pictures of the damaged part that entered the engine to ************ and explained what happened. ************ was in denial and asked what we could do to help him. We tried our best to send the engine back to our supplier for a refund. The refund was rejected because the engine was damaged due to improper installation. Our supplier also tested this engine before it was sent to us.Our supplier knew that the engine was not sold in that condition.
We tried our best to get a refund processed for ************ even though we knew the improper installation caused the engine damage. We explained all of this to ************; he was still in denial. He became extraordinarily irate and began using derogatory names toward us. It was at this point that all professionalism went out the window. We have not had anyone talk to us like that before.
The issue was that *********** at East ********** Repair went and purchased another engine for their customer and could not wait for us to check this engine first. We could have sent this engine back to ************, and they could have fixed the issue they caused and taken care of their customer. We could not get the engine refunded,so ************ became irate. We did our best to help ************, only to be treated with complete disrespect.
We cannot offer ************ a refund on this purchase. We still have the engine here, waiting to figure out what to do with it. Our supplier denied the refund because the engine was damaged during the installation. The Chevrolet dealership confirmed as well that something was dropped into the engine. The situation could have been a lot less complicated if they could have just waited for us to find out what was going on with this engine before they went and purchased another engine.
Ms. ****** from East ********** Repair confirmed that the original engine did have significant internal damage. So this further proves that this part was in the intake manifold when it was swapped over. We wish that the shop had been more understanding. We did not do this to our engine. We sold a tested low-mileage engine to our customers. There was a mistake made on their end by not cleaning out the parts before swapping them onto our engine. This mistake caused the engine to have internal damage. Rather than owning up to their error, they thought it would be okay to treat us disrespectfully and take out their anger on us.
We have put East ********** Repair on a do not sell list. We cannot sell to this customer anymore due to their actions and treatment towards us. We tried our best to help them even when they caused this issue to the engine during installation.
Thank You,
Engine World

I am rejecting this response because:Absolutely none of the response was true, we were never offered a refund. If we were offered a refund we would have taken it. Therefore we have proof that once the vehicle was towed from the shop to **************** for a further diagnosis we were not responsible for the damage to the engine, vehicle as never driven and the engine was Installed the exact way the engine was delivered from the vendor (Engine World) we requested for proof of the compression test and ***** denied any proof and stated he did not have any proof or any video documentation that the engine was compression tested the morning it was sent out. When the engine was received the engine was spray painted to give a new look. We have proof with photos that the engine seemed a little off. There was alot of over spray and you could clearly tell the engine was over sprayed to make it look newer. We installed the engine and took every measure necessary prior to starting engine to ensure an accurate and clean start up. Upon Initial start up, check engine light illuminated, we contacted the dealer to further diagnose the issue. And ****** from **************** confirmed it was nothing we did upon installation. There was a Internal issue with engine . We asked to have him further diagnose the issue and he removed the Intake maniflold which cost us more money, we approved the diagnosis which resulted in an Internal issue with engine. We then had vehicle towed back to East ********** and contacted Engine World with results, we asked for a refund or a replacement engine they denied both, they denied both a refund or a replacement. My technicians have over 20+ years experience. They replace motors all the time and know the proper steps to take when swapping a motor. At this point we plan to take Engine World to small claims court for $5,000 to replenish the labor and parts. We are a business with 4.7 reviews. Engine world has 3.2 star reviews with multiple complaints about ***** and bad engines sold to consumer, with no positive outcomes from any consumer. They constantly deny any accusation made towards them and there warranty is not a real warranty.
Sincerely,
**** MojaInitial Complaint

Date of purchase: 11/22/21 Amount Paid: ******* I purchased an engine from Engine world and they warrantied that all engines are checked and they work perfect. In addition, they warrantied that if there are any issues, they will fix under warranty. However, when engine was installed there was cam noise, when complained about the issue, they recommended to drive it for couple of thousand miles and noise shall go away. ***** didn't go away after 3K miles, when I complained again they just kept ignoring my request.I was able to talk with a gentleman there and he asked me to take the engine out and ship it to them for fix (this option will cost me additional 7K, to take it out and then again install). I requested them that I can bring the car to their *************** for the fix, but they refuse to honor any request. I even offered them that I can go to any shop of their preference, considering you don't needs to pull then engine out for this repair, but they will refuse to honor their warranty.Business response

The customer *************************** **************************************************************** *****), purchased a used 2006 ****** Land Cruiser 4.7L used engine on 10/22/21. The engine was compression tested and oil pressure tested on our test bench that morning before it was delivered. The engine was delivered to ****************** (******************************. *********,** *****). We provide a six-month unlimited mileage warranty on the engine. The warranty expiration date was 4/22/22.
We were contacted on 4/28/22 by ****************,stating there was an issue with the engine. **************** noted the engine was now making noise. We offered to help **************** even though he contacted us after his warranty expired. We explained to **************** that we could fix the engine. We asked him to prepare the engine to be picked up. Once the engine was out and ready, we would pick the engine up and go through and fix the engine. We would not charge for this service.
Our six-month warranty is on the engine assembly itself. We do not cover the cost of labor. It is considered a parts-only warranty. This is stated in huge bold lettering on our invoice NO LABOR WARRANTY. Item #1 of our limited warranty states 1)Purchaser agrees that EngineWorld is not responsible for any cost of labor, parts, towing, installation, dismantling, reinstallation, transportation or freight claim, car rental, loss of work/wages, and/or any other related costs, dealership programming. Because of this, we can offer to assist the customer and help fix the ******************** issue.Again, we do not cover the cost of labor.
We are not a repair facility. We do not work on vehicles here. We only sell engines and transmissions. So bringing the car to us to work on is not an option. We can only fix the engine once it is out of the vehicle. We have never refused service to ****************. We were very helpful and offered to fix the engine free of charge even though ****************** warranty had expired. We can only work within the confines of our limited warranty. We do not cover the cost of labor to have the engine removed and replaced.
If **************** still wants our help, we can help. This case is almost a year old, and **************** has been driving the vehicle this past year. We have never denied service and are still offering our help even though the warranty has expired for almost a full year. Unfortunately, **************** is asking us to pay for the labor costs we cannot provide.
**************** could contact us when he has the engine out and ready. We will pick the engine up, fix the issue and send the engine back. That is more than fair that we are still willing to help **************** even though an entire year has passed since we last spoke about this. Unfortunately, we cannot cover the cost of labor for this. We can only provide our free services to fix the engine once it is removed from the vehicle.

I purchased a used engine for my **** Land Rover Discovery 2. It came with a 6-month warranty expiring November 11, 2022 (still under warranty at his time). It took a while to get the engine swapped by my mechanic. My mechanic noted that the engine looked old and not in great shape and that they had spray-painted it to make it look better. After installing the engine, my mechanic drove it around to test it and then called me to pick it up. I drove it 10 miles to my home and it started to act up (a total of 17 miles). The next day, I started it and drove around the block. The oil pressure light came on, I stopped and waited. I started it up again and the oil light came on again. I parked it at home and a few days later, I had it towed to a mechanic, who told me the engine was shot and there were metal shreds in the oil. I drove it home 8/10 of a mile and then had it towed to another mechanic to get a second opinion. I got the same result. There was no oil pressure and was told most likely it was a failure of the oil pump (which is part of the engine). I called Engine World to exercise the warranty and they told me they would not honor the Warranty because they claimed I overheated the engine. One of the 2 heat tabs they had put on the engine was in perfect condition and the second one showed questionable signs of maybe some heating, possibly happened when I drove it home 8/10 of a mile after the first mechanic told me that the engine was shot. All the cooling system components had been replaced with new ones (radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses, etc.) and there were no signs of overheating such as loss of coolant, blown head gasket, or temperature gage heating up. The engine didn't fail because it overheated (as EW claimed), but rather the oil pump failure and subsequent loss of oil pressure caused the engine to fail. Engine World needs to stand by its warranty. They refused, so I recommend that potential customers NOT engage in business with them.Business response

Complaint: 18319582
I am rejecting this response because:Although it may be ****************** job to reject any and all claims, it is rather troubling to witness the level of twisting of the facts to fit his agenda. In Paragraph #2 he claims that I told him "that the car was overheating and was now making noise" What I told him was, that when I drove the vehicle back to my home after I picked it up from the mechanic who swapped the engine (10 miles drive) I noticed that as I was getting home, the temperature gage showed a slight (almost imperceptible) raise from the horizontal position. It was never even close to the red zone where a car is really overheating to cause damage and there were no noises at the time.In Paragraph #3, even though I had already corrected him verbally on (10.19.22) he insisted in saying that " I had a bad experience with the mechanic that installed the engine, so I took it to another shop to look at it." That is not a true statement. What I told him was, the day after I got home from *************************** (mechanic who swapped the engine), I drove the car around the block to see if there were any issues and that's when the Oil Warning light came on and after stopping immediately, waiting and starting it again, the oil light would come on again so I retuned to my home. Over the next several days, I would start it up and the light would come on and stay on while the vehicle was parked. I would wait about 30 seconds and when the light would not go away, I would then shut the engine off.Because ****, at ******************************* was extremely busy, and he wouldn't be able to look at it for a couple of weeks, I decided to have the vehicle towed to Monsoon Automotive (which is 7/10th of a mile from my home) on 9.30.22. for a diagnosis. I told Monsoon Automotive the same thing, that on my way home from *******************************, it looked like the temperature gage had moved ever so slightly, but never even close to the Red zone and that the issue was an Oil Warning light that would not turn off. Anytime that I may use the word "overheating" is a reference to a higher than normal operating temperature. Vehicles can safely operate in a warmer than normal temperature, as long as it doesn't get into the red zone (and this was never the case).Monsoon Automotive told me that they had found a lot of metal in the oil and that there was no oil pressure and the engine was making noises and that the bearings and engine were shot. Lack of oil pressure is indicative of a bad oil pump, a bad oil sensor or a bad temperature gage. If the oil pump is bad, then the engine is no good, since you would have to literally rebuild the engine to put a new oil pump. I was hoping that it was misdiagnosed and that maybe it was a bad oil sensor (which can be replaced). I then decided to get a second opinion and had the vehicle towed to Brake Masters which is less than a mile from my home.In the last half of paragraph #5 in Engine World's reply, ************** states that all cooling system components get replaced or be in working order. In March of 2022, right before the original engine in my car died, I had installed a brand new radiator, new water pump, new thermostat, new belts, hoses, radiator cap etc.Every component of the cooling system was replaced and in good shape, as evidenced by ****************** Specialists dated 3.15.22 and the Amazon invoices for the cost of the cooling system parts which were ordered on March 8th. The term "overheating" is used to indicate above-normal operating temperature, even though it may not reach the critical red condition of the vehicle's temperature range, to cause damage. The entire cooling system components were replace and in working order and although *************************** replaced the water pump for the second time, all cooling system components were practically new and in good working condition. The "story is not changing to fit my situation" as ************** claims on paragraph 2 of page 2, but rather he seems to be negligently and willfully twisting my words to fit his narrative.Contrary to ****************** exaggeration and speculation that my vehicle was driven for six months before I told them the engine was no good, it took *************************** (one of the best mechanic in town) months to finally do the work and I did not get my car back from him until August 15th, 2022. By looking at the mileage at the time I picked up my car from ***************************, until the time that the car now sits inoperative in my driveway, a total of 17 miles were driven. I was expecting to get ******* miles out of Engine World's motor, NOT just 17.On paragraph 4 of page 2, ************** states that " it was after the engine got hot and overheated, that the customer started having issues with the ********************". This is another lie, based on speculation. Overheating was not the cause of engine failure, if this was the case, there would have been a blown head gasket, a defective water pump, a bad thermostat, old hoses busted and a bad radiator (none of which happened). There would also have been a loss of coolant and that is not the case, as the level of the coolant never dropped. THE ENGINE FAILED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO OIL PRESSURE, CAUSING UNLUBRICATED COMPONENTS IN A 21 YEAR-OLD ENGINE TO BRAKE DOWN, possibly due to a failed oil pump and therefore, putting Engine World in the position to honor their warranty. At Brake Masters during the second opinion, they had to raise the vehicle on the lift to try to find the heat tabs, (which were extremely hard to find) including having to remove the starter motor to find the one that was hidden. Even then, the pictures of the heat tab indicate clearly, at least in one of them that there was NO OVERHEATING (no melting) and the other one being a toss-up. Engine World talked to the mechanics at Brake Masters and received the pictures taken by the technicians, who told them that 5 out of eight cylinders in their engine were no good.Contrary to ****************** claims on page 3, ALL cooling system components were new or relatively new. And of course the "diagnose of the engine was done before I contacted Engine World on 10.7.22"...what viable reason would I have to contact them if they engine had not failed? Pictures of the heat tabs show no melting in one of them and a questionable "possible melting" caused by lack of oil pressure on the other, probably as a result of high friction after the engine failed for lack of lubrication.Bottomline is: THE ENGINE FAILED DUE TO A LACK OF LUBRICATION DUE TO A FAILED OIL PUMP, NOT DUE TO A COOLING SYSTEM FAILURE (which is intact and in good working order)Engine World OWES me the price I paid them for a 20 year old engine that was not in good working condition. Even *************************** said that the engine looked in questionable shape and that they just spray-painted it gray to make it look good. I deserve to have the warranty honored and have the $2,090 I paid, returned to me. Otherwise, Engine World should not be making misleading statements about their "warranty".Sincerely,

Our decision still stands. We cannot offer a replacement engine or a refund on the purchase due to the engine overheating and voiding our limited warranty.
The heat tab sensors we placed on the engine show that the engine exceeded 255 degrees. The engine cannot reach these temperatures due to a lack of lubrication, as ************* describes. It is the cooling system's job to maintain the engine temperature. The cylinder heads and block will receive coolant from the water pump at different stages. That is why the heat tab sensor on the cylinder head is melted, and the one on the block may still be intact.
There is no way around this. These heat tab sensors are based on thermal conduction that comes from the internal temperature of the metal of the cylinder head. The cylinder head exceeded 255 degrees Fahrenheit. ************** is not a professional mechanic and is trying to reason that this could be possible without the cooling system having a problem. Overheating is not possible unless the cooling system has some kind of failure.
The temperatures in ******, *******, averaged around 100 degrees in August and over 106 degrees in July. Where ************** lives is a hot environment. That is why it is essential to ensure the cooling system parts are replaced. One minor issue with an older cooling system part can cause the engine to overheat quickly.Monsoon Automotive stated in its diagnosis paperwork that the car was overheating. Monsoon Automotive is a third-party shop that ************** took his vehicle to have diagnosed. If the professional repair shop also states the car is overheating, we wonder what more explanation is needed.
We are sorry, but we can offer no further options to ***************Had the heat tab sensors been intact, we could have moved forward with a warranty replacement or refund. Unfortunately, we cannot offer this because the engine is overheated.
Thank You,
Engine World

Complaint: 18319582
I am rejecting this response because:* The engine failed during the warranty period and Engine World must honor this and refund me the cost of the engine.* One of the Heat tabs did not melt and the other one is inconclusive. Questionable melting on it could have happened when the engine failed due to deterioration and/or lack of lubrication.* ************** erroneously infers that the friction of an engine without lubrication cannot generate heat. This is just NOT true.* Failure of the oil pump created extreme friction and damaged internal components, as evidenced by the failure of 5 out of 8 cylinders, shredded bearings and metal shards in the oil.* There was no failure of the cooling system., as evidenced by intact cooling system components, no evidence of blown Head Gasket and no loss of coolant.************** states in paragraph 3 of EW's second response letter that, "Overheating is not possible unless the cooling system has some kind of failure". While this may have a kernel of truth depending on its context, vehicles have a range of temperature (between cold and super-hot) in which they can safely operate without causing damage to the engine. A vehicle may "overheat" above the normal temperature and safely operate in this safety range, without ever reaching the red danger zone, where damage can occur.I told ************** and also Monsoon Automotive, that as I was getting home from picking up my car from *************************** (who installed engine), I notice a slight "overheating" above the normal horizontal position of the temperature gage. The term "overheating" in this instance, is used to indicate any temperature above the normal horizontal position of the temperature gage and NOT necessarily in the Danger Zone. This only lasted a few seconds before I pulled into my driveway. It never even got remotely close to the HOT/Danger Zone. This probably took place as the engine began to fail and the friction due to a lack of lubricant circulation, might have caused a temporary temperature increase, which the cooling system remedied as I pulled into my driveway. Next morning when I started the vehicle up, the oil light came on and from that time forward, it never went off. The engine had already failed. The "overheating" reference in Monsoon Automotive's invoice was part of my statement to them to help them find the problem, NOT a diagnosis as ************** misleadingly stated.Engine World's "Warranty" boils down to : "Engines are guaranteed for 6 months, UNLESS THEY FAIL" and while ************** claims that "they can offer no further options", I on the other hand, will exercise my option to raise my right hand and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God at the *********** County Court House.I am disappointed that Engine World prays on customers in such a deceptive way, but that is what happens when a business lacks the integrity to stand behind their products. I understand that I gambled on the hopes that a 20 year old used engine that has been sitting in a warehouse deteriorating, would still be good after all these years, but I believed them. It is what happens when people accept the twisted untruths of uncouth marketing and sales ploys.I would caution anybody who is looking into doing business with Engine World, to think twice before proceeding and if I can prevent one single customer from becoming another victim, then, I will have fulfilled my Civil Duty. This is my final response.
Sincerely,

The customer *********************************** ******************. **************************************) purchased a used **** ***** Civic 1.6L Non-VTEC used engine on 05/24/22. The engine was compression tested and oil pressure tested on our test bench that morning before it was delivered.
We were contacted on 06/10/22 by **********************, stating there was an issue with the engine. The customer said the ******************** had a vacuum leak and erratic idle. We had the customer bring the car down so we could help diagnose the issue. We found that the intake manifold that ********************** had swapped over onto our engine was warped or cracked. The faulty intake manifold is what was causing the vacuum leak. We offered to help fix the problem. We asked that ********************** remove the intake manifold from the engine. We will then come and pick up the manifold and have it resurfaced and checked for cracks. Fixing the intake manifold would then correct the problem that he was having with the vacuum leak.
********************** became very irate and did not want to work with us to fix the problem. We are still offering our help to him. We purchased an engine that has a 6 month warranty. 1 month and 10 days later it developed an internal fault that causes the motor to over heat by leaking anti freeze into the combustion chamber with the spark plugs on half the engine. We are being declined the warranty because it over heats. No where an the warranty does it say that over heating caused by an internal fault is not covered. We have tried to work with them but they have the original engine that went in this car as required as part of the sale. That leaved us with only this engine. We have no choice but to perform repairs on this engine. We asked for an exchange but they refuse and offer only to sell us another engine. There is no external cause for this engine failure. The radiator was replaced 7-1-2021. at the time of the engine install it was tested and passed. All the components of the cooling system were replaced at the time of the engine replacement. Hoses, thermostat, radiator cap. coolant temp sensor. fan temp sensor. there are no external leaks. the fans operate as they were designed. There are no additional repairs required beyond replacing the engine. The head gasket failure is not a result of another issue. The engine runs at a higher then normal temperature, the engine has a severe misfire because of the internal failure. We have no choice at this point but to restore the cars operation by replacing the cylinder head gasket and having the cylinder head machined. This price exceeds the cost of the engine.
