In late August, my computer was hacked by a someone using a Best Buy Geek Squad email. I opened an email with the subject of your Best Buy maintenance agreement is about to expire. I realized that I was hacked after receiving the same email and not opening the email realizing it was not from Best Buy. I googled about the scam and googled a phone number for Best Buy. I call the 800 in the above bullet points and the agent discussed how to fix the problem. I thought that I was speaking to a Geek Squad agent but it was a Geek Care agent. I do not believe at any time that the agent properly identify himself as an agent of Geek Care. The agent told me that before he would proceed to fix my PC that I had to resign my maintenance agreement for 3-5 years. I choose to go with the $940 five year option. I actually thought that I was renewing my agreement with Best Buy. With my permission and payment of $940, the agent proceeding to identify the hackers code and remove it. The agent also install software (obtained for free on the internet) to better protect my PC in the future. I never understood that I was not talking to a Best Buy Geek Squad agent. I discovered the misrepresentation while shopping at Best Buy. I told a best buy retail rep that I had a five year maintenance agreement and he informed me that Best Buy only does 1 year agreements that are renewable each year. I called Geek Care and a manager explained that he was from Geek Care and that they never represented themselves from Geek Squad. The whole experience was such a poor business practice since the names are so close. I asked the agent to cancel my contract and refund me the money. The agent refused to give me a refund.
