On Monday February 28th I entered the downtown branch of Belmont Bank and Trust with a check issued by that bank issued to me by their customer, *************** for a refund on a deposit for a vehicle. I stated that I was there to cash a check and that I would like to also open a checking account. After a short wait, *************************** helped me fill out a checking account application. She came back from speaking with a manager and stated that she would have to call me by the end of the business day to let me know if they would be able to open the account. She stated that it is bank policy not to cash checks, even those originating from the bank. That struck me as odd, but I complied and left with the uncashed check. A few hours later I received a call from them stating that I was not approved for a checking account. I asked why and she stated that, though my name did not show any negative remarks in ChexSystems, that my credit score was too low to open a checking account. I am surprised that a hard inquiry had happened on my credit while opening a checking account, especially without my consent. I believe it is not standard practice to check credit scores for opening basic checking accounts. I also believe a bank should honor checks that originate from that bank. I was happy to deposit the full amount of the check into a new checking account and wait the required time for it to clear. They lost a valuable customer, if not because of their bizarre branch policies, because of discriminatory customer service.
