Better Business Bureau: I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the purchase of a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 2021 from Jones Junction dealership, financed through Freedom Federal Credit Union. My experience with this vehicle has been filled with issues that have left me frustrated and disappointed. Shortly after the purchase, I discovered that my car insurance did not cover the vehicle, resulting in a $12,000 penalty added to the loan. Despite providing proof of coverage, only $3,000 was deducted from the penalty, leaving me with a balance of $9,000. Additionally, a fuel pump recall was announced for this model, posing a safety concern. After reaching out to various dealerships, I was informed that no parts are available to fix the issue, leaving me without a resolution for approximately a year. I inquired about trading in the vehicle, but was told that the negative equity from depreciation and penalty fees would still apply, making the trade-in price the same. This would leave me with a faulty vehicle, a high monthly balance, and no clarity on a fix. I was offered a rental vehicle as a temporary solution, but this means I would continue making payments on a vehicle I no longer want. My goal now is to sever all financial ties with Freedom Federal Credit Union & Jones Junction of Belair MD and return the vehicle. I request immediate assistance in facilitating this process. Legally, Maryland vehicles must be insured to minimum standards, when there is a lapse in coverage, the lender must charge for collateral protection insurance. This isn’t a penalty as this is an insurance fee, and if proof of full coverage during the lapsed period is submitted, those collateral insurance protection fees can be reimbursed. Partial coverage results in a partial reimbursement. Unfortunately any car must be insured fully as a part of all standard auto loan agreements. Ultimately, this is for the owner’s protection, as well as the lender’s. If the vehicle was totaled a month after purchase, and the car isn’t insured, the car’s owner would still be responsible for paying off the loan. But with insurance, that insurance pays off the loan. That is why it’s required, so that the vehicle’s owner is protected in an instance like this. Financial ties with Freedom Federal Credit Union can be severed at loan payoff or refinance.
