    The American Inventors Protection Act of 1999, took effect in January, 2000. Under the law, invention promoters must: 1) Disclose in writing the number of positive and negative evaluations of inventions they have given over a five year period, and 2) Disclose their customers' success in receiving net financial profit and license agreements as a direct result of the invention promotion services. Customers harmed by a failure to make the above disclosures or by any false or fruadulent representations by the promoter can sue to recover statory damages of up to $5,000, or actual damages. Damages can be tripled by the court if it finds that the violations are intentional or willful.
