I hosted someone through the Home Exchange program. The guest agreed to a $300 cleaning fee after the stay. I normally do not rent out to people with pets, but they assured me they would not be a problem or leave a mess. By the end of the stay it turned out not to be true. They allowed their cat to climb all over all the furniture. And there was cat hair left almost everywhere. In the carpets, the couches, everything. My cleaner spent hours trying to vacuum all the hair, and was mostly successful, but couldn't get it all. We have a couch cover on one of our couches that we washed multiple times but could not get out the hair. I had to replace the cover. I requested damages to cover the replacement cover. Of $54. Home exchange takes a $500 deposit to cover damages. The guest has refused to cover these damages and the representative from home exchange has been ignoring my emails for over a week now. I don't know what else to do other than file a complaint about this company since they don't seem to protect hosts, despite taking a deposit from the guests. I have provided photos of the damage and the receipt to Home Exchange and that's the last that I've heard from them.
