Deans construction company went door to door claiming they had leftover material from a construction job they had just finished and offered to excavate and lay a new surface of gravel on my 88 year old elderly father's driveway at the cost of the material ONLY. They said the labor was already paid for and there would be no fee for that. Dean told my elderly father they would measure and give a price prior to beginning the work but he did not. Dean took some measurements but did not tell my father what the total cost would be once completed. He and his brother and work crew moved their equipment in and began working before it registered with my father and before my father had a chance to think or comprehend what was happening. Dean was very friendly to my father and kept him talking about other things, causing my father to not focus or realize that he was being taken. The work was completed in an hour and the job was poorly done. Dean told my father that they would put in two layers of material but only did one. They rolled it down with a roller so fast that it was not packed well and many spots in the driveway were not rolled at all. This company did not provide an estimate or contract. After the work was completed Dean gave my father a bill for $7500. This was for less than 5 ton of gravel/dirt that should not have cost more than $1000. Once again, Dean said the cost was for the material only. My father is an honest man who always pays his debts and thus he paid Dean Cooper what Dean claimed was a reasonable price. This was a big chunk of money out of my elderly parents meager savings. They live on social security alone and could not afford this. Dean Cooper worked with his brothers and we have since learned that he and his brothers have been in trouble with the law and the attorney general in the past for their driveway scam business. We hope something can be done to put these people out of the scam business.
