On April 8th, 2022 I purchases a new ***** truck cap for my 2019 Ford Ranger at a cost of $2194.78. Upon inspection of the cap the following day (Saturday) I noticed that the inside corners of the fiberglass shell had been cut out using a reciprocating blade and creating a 1x4 inch hole on both the driver's side and passenger's side corners. On Monday, April 11th, I returned to R&S Truck Caps to complain of the damage. They took pictures of the holes and said they would report it to the *****. manufacturer in Massillon. I returned to R&S Truck Caps on Wednesday, April 13th. They looked up my file and told me I could return the truck cap to the manufacturer for a $1000.00 restocking fee. They also said it may be possible to waterproof the holes using a butyl putty. R&S suggested this is the way the cap came from the manufacturer. I contacted the manufacturer and I am waiting for a response. I simply want a cap without pre-existing damage - or a return of my money.

Response for the BBB letter dated 4/19 and received in the mail on 4/22

      Case ID ********

After reviewing any possible solutions or options with the truck cap manufacturer, on 4/20 we responded to Mr. ******* email to us as follows:

      Hello Mr. *******

I am sorry we cannot satisfy you with the fit of the *****. truck cap on your Ford Ranger.

After checking with *****., it would not matter which model you would choose, the front of all the cap models are molded to accept the Ford Factory Bed Caps the same way. See the attachment.

The way the OEM's design the new trucks can cause issues for fit and water leakage.  The ***** ********* will leak through the body panels, the ** truck has holes and seams in the bulkhead, the ****** requires extra spacers across the bulkhead top edge, and the new redesigned Ranger has these large (tall) Bed Caps that have gaps under them and holes in the bulkhead. (see attachments of the old and new Ranger for comparison).

As a Dealer, we cannot explain why the OEM would design the truck this way, nor can we explain why *****. designed the caps the way they did.  For that reason, our only option is to refund you for the cap purchase.

Barring any damage to the cap, we will refund you 100% of the price of the cap.

Your appointment for Friday is still good and we will remove the cap then.

On Friday 4/22, Mr* ****** had an appointment already scheduled to review the fit of the cap and see if we could make any adjustments to minimize water leakage. Based on our review with the manufacturer, we communicated the response above.  We removed the cap that day and refunded 100% of his purchase price at the time he came in.

See the attachment included to see the manufacturer specs for the 1” x 4” cutout. This cutout is molded and then trimmed to accommodate the tall bed caps that come from Ford on this model of truck.  The new Ranger probably has the tallest bed caps of all the trucks and has created problems for any type of bed cover that is installed, concerning leakage and fit.  There are also holes under the bed caps that you can almost stick your finger through and other holes in the front of the bulkhead that can create a challenge to seal out water.  Even if sealed at first, the constant road vibrations from driving can cause leakage to reappear. These holes and seams are from the way Ford designs the truck.

We try to exhaust every option to satisfy our customers, as truck caps are made per order, and are non-refundable without a large restocking fee from the manufacturer.

I am sorry we couldn’t accommodate Mr.****** and wish him the best in finding a suitable replacement. R&S truck Caps has been in business since 1983 and we pride ourselves in doing our best to satisfy our customers.
