On 9/14/22 we signed a contract with JSL to replace our front porch. We paid a $650 deposit and an additional $5,850 at the completion of the job. They estimated on 9/14 that the job was 4 to 6 weeks out. They didn't do the job until November. At first I was satisfied with the job overall, even though we put up with a lot of employee issues that the owner Jake was dealing with. It is now about 6 months later. The main front support post on the corner of the porch has split and the porch is sinking to the point that the lattice is bending. A JSL employee named ***** has been out twice in the last week to look at the issue and to take pictures. He agreed with us both times that it is defective work (post was not put in concrete and post was notched at the top because the band boards are not even at the corner. The weight bearing on the notched part caused the post to split). ***** said they would repair the problem initially. ***** called us back on 6/5/23 and said that Jake decided he didn't offer warranties on porches and refuses to fix it, look at it, or take our calls. I feel a porch that we paid $6,500 for should last longer than 6 months. Poor workmanship on this job overall. Structural damage is being caused from the fact that the front porch is attached to the house on one side, but sinking on the other. JSL caused this problem and needs to fix this problem.

We have looked at project and normal cracking from expansion, contration, warping in normal wearing from lumber from lowes out of my control.

I have attched porch photo when completed got 5 star review andwas completely satisfied.  They wanted untreated deck boards they said wasn't painting till spring. So I told them has to be atleast primed. Did that for free. Primed whole porch. Then they wanted porch jacked up wasn't part of deal but we did it anyways.  Upon completion they were ecstatic about all of it.  Now they never painted and is dirty they want to have deck rebuilt. You can see post has not sunk and lattice. Had a wave in it when we left job. Due to lattice sitting on soil.  Complaint is wood related not a  labor warranty.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, reasons for rejection are included below.

In regards to their answer, I am not complaining about the paint job. I have had 2 other contractors look at the job and the post split is from the notch cut into it and then the entire weight load from the front band board only resting on less than an inch of wood and that notch with the load on it is where the wood has cracked down the entire beam, not normal cracking from Lowe's. They did put primer on the porch (which we provided) but they also got paint on the walls of the house and repainted spindles on the porch that I had already painted with decorative paint but this complaint is not about paint and I don't care about the paint. I only care about the split post and the fact that the porch has sunk and the lattice has bowed. The owner says this is normal but he has refused to come out to the house and view the damage itself. The owner stated that the lattice is bowed from being on the ground. It was not bowed when it was installed and the lattice didn't grow, nor did the ground. The lattice is bowing because the porch has sunk.

We did not hire them initially to just make our porch pretty, We hired them because the original post was rotted and the corner of the porch was sinking. They knew from the day the job was bid that the reason for this job was to raise the corner of the porch and put in a new support post. Raising the corner was not an after-thought once the porch was completed. It was the main reason for having the job done.

While the owner of the business has refused to speak to us or come see the problem in person, his employee ***** has been to the site twice to inspect and take pictures. ***** agreed with us both times that the problem was from the notched post and that it needed to be repaired. Maybe the owner should see the problem in person instead of having ***** tell us that he won't speak to us until we apologize for changing his ****** review from a 5 star to a 1 star. Maybe the owner should provide some of the pictures that ***** has taken in the last week instead of just pictures of when the porch was completed 6 months ago.

think it is totally normal for someone to be ecstatic over seeing a newly completed project but when the poor workmanship and mistakes start showing up a few months later, it is also normal for someone's opinion about the job to change. This is a workmanship defect and not normal wood behavior.

      Regards,

      ****** *****

Since complant has been filed. I responded. Then even though not a warranty. I still sent my guys to replace post. And flatten lattice.  Homeowner said she  was happy with everything and would be removing reviews and bbb complaint.  So complaint is resolved.  Thanks.

JSL replaced our entire roof in September of 2019. Their work came with a work guarantee. We are within the timeline of the work guarantee on our roof. Our roof started losing shingles about three weeks ago and when we noticed it I called JSL to have them come out to look and repair it two weeks ago. No response from the first call. I called again last week, spoke with the secretary, transferred to the project manager to leave a message, left a message and still no reply. We are now down to tar paper on our roof in certain spots with no word from the company.
