I became a volunteer executive board member for **********************, located at ******************************************************************* in January, 2022. New board learned that taxes for 2021 had not been filed. The previous board reported that "payroll summary was the only thing provided by bookkeeper". Repeated calls/emails to owner Connie ******************** were not returned. This continued for several months. On January 3, 2023 we were told taxes would be filed in 2 weeks: this did not happen. On May 1, 2023 office manager, *********************, and I met with Ms. ********************* She said the person that did our books had quit and that she (Ms. ********************* was swampd. She said she was missing payroll statements so she was given access to our bank account. She said that she was making us her priority. On April 2 another board member, ***************** and I met with Connie. She repeated that an employee had quit and they were behind. When asked if we could file an extension, she informed us that "you don't have to file because you are a non-profit organizaion". We hired a new bookkeeper on April 10. On May 1 ***************** and I met with Ms. ******************** again and gave her a flash drive to download our files. On May 23, I again asked if taxes were done and asked if she needed any further information. She did not say she needed anything. On June 5, I contacted her again (taxes had not been filed) and said we needed to have our records returned as we hired a new bookkeeper. June 5 we had not been given our information. August 7 we got the flashdrive but were unable to open it. Sept 5 we informed Ms. ******************** that we received a notice from the *** re: no taxes being filed. Ms ******************** said she had been in an accident, was in hospital, skilled nursing facility that didn't have internet, and was now wheelchair bound. Nov 6 we got profit/loss statements for 2021-2022 and new bookkeeper was able to file. Due to late filing, the *** is charging $5929 for 2021 and $4200 for 2022. I sent appeal to *** on Jan. 23Business response

The situation was a little more complex and complicated than ******************** states. There is much more to the story. They will need to provide us the letters showing the penalties and give us the opportunity to apply for our own forgiveness to see if they can be resolved that way. Otherwise, we will pay what is our portion of those penalties. Not all of that is on us. They did NOT originally hire us to do anything other than payroll and bookkeeping, which is all we ever charged for. They did NOT provide the payroll reports we needed from the bookkeeper before us, so we couldn't file that return. We have many clients we provide payroll services to who do not use our company to prepare their taxes. We have companies for whom we prepare taxes and they have payroll done elsewhere. There is no one size fits all here. This is a "he said, she said" situation, so I am not going to rehash it here. I have yet to get back to the office. I was in a skilled nursing facility from Memorial Day to mid July, and have been recuperating and working remotely from my home office. I will return next week, part time, to the ******* office, still in a wheelchair.
BTW, they should not have included their POA in this complaint. That's a breach of confidentiality. I have all the emails regarding this situation. It was May 23, 2023 before we got all of the information we requested to file the returns. The next week, I had my accident, and was unable to work from a SNF (skilled nursing facility). My last communique with ******************** is below.
