We hired ***** Emerick to build 2 decks. He requested we pay the supplies in full upfront in order to start the job. He showed up only 3 days and did minimal work, did not have all the material and then completely stopped responding to calls/texts. He stole $12,000 and his work that he did do was later done by someone stating it was done incorrectly

Hired Shane to complete an addition that was already framed and wired. The plan was to finish the addition upstairs, put insulation and plywood in the attic, pour cement in the basement under the addition, frame and wire the basement, build steps to the basement, and put a doorway to connect the original basement to the new basement. He told me 3-5 weeks once he got money. I paid him over $24k September 9th, 2022. He started working sporadically in November, hardly showed up in December and January. My construction loan was due to expire the beginning of March. The bank started contacting Shane. He said everything would be done March 31, 2023. We are now at the end of April. My addition is still not finished. He has only put insulation in the walls, most of the drywall up, put mudding in some areas, but none where the wall and the ceiling meet. He put a door in the basement and also installed a ladder to the attic. Since mid-February he has been to the site less than 20 times. At best, he comes 1-2 times a week for a couple hours each time, some weeks he doesn't show up at all. Between myself and the bank I have my loan through, we have come up between $9k and $12k being accounted for of the over $24k he received. Every time he is contacted, if he responds, he has another excuse like "I'm just behind" or "it's too cold" but he doesn't show up on warm days either.

Shane E****** was hired to do the build out of my small business. Shane and I negotiated a 3 week turnaround time and payment terms of 3 payments. First payment to begin the job and cover the cost of materials up front (per Shane’s request), and two checks to cover the balance, one paid one week after work had begun if progress was being made and the second once the job was completed. Shane started work on June 7th after the first check cleared. If the job went longer than expected, I had the right to renegotiate labor costs. Also, any costs above the agreed upon quote needed to be approved in advance. Shane was paid the second check, with an additional $500 to cover additional labor and supplies when a change was made. None of these extra materials were ever purchased by Shane. After Shane received the second check, he was very difficult to communicate with and stopped showing up with any regularity. He did not meet the week 3 deadline and had about 50% of the work done. For a span of 10 days, Shane was unable to be reached and did not work at all. He returned to work a week later and stated that everything would be completed by the following week. He did not return again for another week, and sporadically spent a few hours working over the course of a few days without ever giving us a completion date. We let Shane go from the rest of the buildout the week after. It cost us $7,200 to finish or fix what Shane was supposed to accomplish and to buy materials that we already had paid Shane to purchase. We had to pay other handymen and contractors to finish what Shane couldn’t complete and redo parts of the projects that were not completed correctly due to bad workmanship or Shane not following instructions.
