Builders weren't properly vetted. The first builder was Amish and ran out on us. Fortunately we hadn't paid anything, but he delayed the loan approval process. Then we got another reference from Southland Log Homes. The 2nd Amish builder said he'd be ready within 6 mos. It took a year for paperwork to go through and then the builder wasn't ready for another year. He didn't follow the log home plans and then blamed Southland Log Homes for not supplying enough of the correct logs.

Southland Log Homes is a big S***!! Between the salesman and the project manager (Danielle W******), I was scammed out of $22096.00 I was not provided with Final approved plans, so I was not able to hire Contractors therefore I was not able to meet my delivery date that I agreed upon in the contract for my Log home. I was not refunded my down payment because of the wording on the contract, ...although the project manager ( Danielle W******) breached the contract on three counts? I requested my $22096.00 to be refunded, but was told that it is non-refundable. Beware!!! Southland Log Homes do not provide what they promise!!!

Southland homes are fine. The list of builders contain an inept builder. AVS Builders put up the log home, but the interior buildout was substandard. They talked a big talk but couldn't deliver all they promised and were always asking for money before they tried to perform the task. Their subs were not vetted for quality work and were not supervised by the contractor. Things were left uncompleted or poorly installed and they had to come back and re-do the work. The shower was beautiful but didn't come with a door??? Who buys a car without a steering wheel. I hired another contractor to install a door. An extra $1650. Didn't come with a driveway an extra $4500. I paid him and he brought in very poor quality soil after a month and I had to hire another contractor to make a proper driveway with the proper subsoil gravel and crushed rock so I don't get stuck in the mud $10,660. If you use AVS to erect your home, don't let them do the buildout or anything else.

SLH provided us a very experienced sales manager to work with here in our area in Texas. He was excellent in guiding us through the process to purchase our new log home kit. The recommended builder that we selected and his experienced work crew, did an excellent job providing us with the constructed log home shell as a turnkey project. The Builder’s work scope also included the design & installation of a third party engineered foundation on our somewhat remote property location. Our log home is relatively large in size with some very high cathedral ceilings in its design. Our log home was not an easy construction project in my opinion. I plan to solicit the services of the builder again in the near future for some of the interior finishing type work if he can find room in his busy schedule for us.

We LOVE our Southland log home. Top of the line materials, which creates a very fuel-efficient home. Delivery was on time. The staff at Southland is extremely professional and non-aggressive. A word to the buyer - You are buying a kit only. The price you are paying is for a kit only. Be sure to hire a builder who has experience in building this type of home, as it is quite different from a regular home. Southland will have recommendations for your area. Also, keep in mind that the builder can deliver you a "shell", which is four walls and a roof; and, you can finish the rest. There will be additional charges for walls, build-out, electricians, plumbers, etc. Review your budget carefully prior to purchase. All in all, we are extremely pleased. My dream has come true!

We bought our Southland log home and was given a great deal. The deal took no more than 30 minutes. I put the home together by myself (98 percent) it took me 3 years to put together I was 61 years old (I am 71 now) when I started. We had the kit shipped to Taiwan. Everyone has said that this kind of house was not suitable for Taiwan. Thie log home has withstood a super typhoon and many strong earthquakes and one very strong earthquake over 6 on the Richter scale. People that come inside ask if we have our a/c on which we do not. ( BY the way this is a 2 story 3 bedroom 2 and 1/2 baths, kitchen, dining room, walk in closets and pantry, lots of storage and an attached 24ft. by 24ft. garage. I would do it again if I were younger.

I love my Southland Log Home but my design had dimensional changes that I did not recognize until too far into construction to re-design. It would have been good to talk more with the design team. Lesson learned if I ever build anything again. Russell Wise

The Southland log home kit was very excellent, but the builder network was not very good and should have shared with the buyer before a contract was signed. We had to terminate the first builders that was referred by SLH, they had to travel too far and had never built a SLH. We love our log home and would recommend the company to other prospective customers.

Love my house. We did it ourselves with a lot of help from Southland. We’d call and they would answer. If our contact wasn’t available they would call back the same day. We had lots of dumb questions and if they laughed at us we didn’t hear. You do need a strong back if you do yourself, some logs extremely heavy and you’d need 3-5 people but others only 1 person could carry. It was like a big jigsaw puzzle. After all was said and done it was worth it. When we started this, contractors were hard to find and wanted big $$ and were so backed up with work it would have been months before they could get to us, thus the reason we did ourselves. I would recommend, whether you do or have some other contractor. You’ll be happy with the results. Don’t be afraid to call on Southland for help. They’ll be there for you

We love the house. This was a different experience for us as we have built regular homes on two other occasions in the past. This process is quite different because you're buying a kit, then you got to hire a contractor to assemble it. It did come with an old video to do this yourself, which was neat to watch. Anyway, make sure you consult with a contractor before you make the decision to build the log home, as the cost to put it up may surprise you.
