I noticed my electric bill from *********** an amount equal to or greater than what ****** charges me. I NEVER signed anything (contract or otherwise) authorizing Great American Power to bill me for my electric service. I know i don't have alot of info to back me up but I'm wondering how this happened.

I contracted for a fixed fee, fixed term utility service. At the end of that 6 month term - Great American Power renewed without my consent at a rate that was double what I contracted. I was paying 4.5 cents per Kilowatt hour on my contract, which they increased to 9 cents without my permission. That is about 50% above the market rate at time of writing, possibly higher when they made that switch 3 months ago. I didn't catch the change until this month's bill unfortunately, and have now dropped them as a supplier. This is the most unethical business practice I've encountered in owning a home, and believe there should be penalties. This business is doing societal harm and should be remediated.

Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2022/03/31) */ Mr. ****, Great American Power takes any complaints seriously. I was unable to locate your account with the information provided however if you were enrolled in a 6 month fixed contact, we send a renewal notice 45 and 30 days prior to the end of the current contract letting the customer know of the contract ending and the new fixed rate for their new upcoming term. This allow the customer to opt out of the new term and provide additional notification that the contract was ending. Please note Great American Power does not charge early termination fees. Fixed offers do vary based on time of year and electric prices. Please feel free to call our customer service with any additional questions you may have. Consumer Response /* (3000, 7, 2022/04/03) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) This is an unethical business - charging double after a fixed contract without any authorization from the customer. There may be some fine print that makes it technically legal, but I don't buy it. Sending something in the mail which you may or may not have done doesn't excuse the practice of 100% rate hikes going above and beyond market conditions. "Great America Power" is stealing from great American families. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Business Response /* (4000, 9, 2022/04/04) */ Mr. ****, No small print, part of the agreement and contract summary on the first page not in small print states that after your contract ends you will be notified 45 and again 30 days prior to your contact ending with your new rate. The new rate you were offered is in accordance with market increases for that time period. We don't ever want a customer to be surprised by a new rate which is exactly why we sent two notices and also have no termination fees. Our customer care team would be happy to point to the first page of the contract summary, the entire page is a graph highlighting the 6 important parts of your contract, the renewal terms is one of those.
