On 6/29/24 we entered into an agreement with Christopher Carl of Local Home Repair LLC to repair my deck at *** ****** ***** *** ** ******* **. The job entailed removing and replacing old joist and deck and installing new joist and trex decking along with the addition of a roof over the deck. The original agreed price was $11,000. We agreed half up front and half on completion. I paid him $5500 7/1/24. The job was to be completed in "a couple of weeks" as we had out of state guest coming the end of July. After an immediate demo of 50% of the deck, he said he needed to increase the price to $14000 and wanted an addition "draw" of $4000. We agreed to pay the new total price but paid an additional $2000 made out to his wife **** ******* as he had a problem with cashing checks in his name. Total paid was $7500. Some lumber was delivered to the job site but little happened for the next 2 months. As of 8/25/24 the demo was still incomplete and there was only replacement of several boards in the deck band and 10 new joist were up. The new joist were crooked, bowed, and uneven. Of greater concern was the damage that occurred during demo. There was damage to the vinyl siding, a downspout, a 50 amp electrical conduit, and a paver walkway where the deck stairs were removed without providing an edge allowing it to washout. On 8/25/24 I asked him to meet me at the job site to go over what we were seeing. Chris said it would have to be the following week as he had a fishing trip planned. I expressed our disappointment and asked for a refund. He said that he would like to make it right but given the work done so far, we felt that he does not have the skill set to do the job. We had video on the job site and saw a worker probably no more than 13-14 years old. We estimate that the demo should have cost no more than $1000 (2 men, $25/hr, 10 hrs each) and the materials delivered to the site was no more than $1500. We requested a refund of $5000, no contact since.
