Well let me tell you about my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander with a 10 year warranty. I bought the car brand new in March of 2022 thinking that outside of oil changes, I wouldn't need to spend any money on it for a while because it is brand new. About a month ago I started hearing a noise out of the rear end of the car, mostly when making turns and pulling away. Take it to the dealership here in Sydney N.S. and they tell me that the rear differential needs to be replaced. I also ask them to check for another clunking noise from the rear end that is more noticeable when I hit a bump. Take the car in, they call me to let me know that the other noise is from the differential and, oh, by the way, your rear brakes are shot. What? Less than 2 years old and less than 30,000 kms on it and my brakes are shot? Spoke to the salesman we bought the car from and he mentioned that it could have something to do with the electronic braking system. Call Mitsubishi Canada help(less) line, no help at all. Had to replace the tires at 20,000 kms, now I have to replace the brakes at less than 30,000 kms. Is a ten-year warranty really worth anything? It sure is a good selling point. Spoke to a dealer in another city, he said that because of the way the computer handles the brakes, they are being applied without the driver even knowing they are. When you take your foot off the gas pedal at low speed, the breaks are applied because the computer thinks you are about to stop, so it starts the stop for you. Also, when you take your foot off the brake, you can still feel the brakes dragging, causing then to wear out quicker. * ***** **** ********** *** ******** ** ** **** ** **** *** **** **** ***** **** **** Because the breaks are a "wearable item", they are not covered under warranty. If this is normal, why aren't the front brakes having the same issue? Will I buy another Mitsubishi, take a guess. Will I ever recommend one to family or friends, take a guess.

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada Inc Response

    25/01/2024

Thank you for your feedback and for taking the time to correspond with us. Due to the fact brake wear is affected by numerous variable circumstances, such as driving style and habits as well as environmental conditions, it is difficult to apply an arbitrary time/odometer reading to qualify brake wear. As a wearable item, they are not included under our Manufacturer's Limited Base Warranty but are eligible for replacement during the adjustment period corresponding to 12 months or 20,000 kms, whichever occurs first. Should there be a repairable defect within braking system which is eligible for warranty coverage and which may have contributed to the brake pads or rotors being damaged or worn out, such items can be considered as consequential or secondary items and covered as part of the repair claim. However, as a stand-alone item, and outside 12 month, 20,000 km adjustment period they are considered to be a customer paid maintenance item. The stability control system does also solicit the rear brake system in certain circumstances, when cornering or in limited traction situations where wheelspin or traction loss is detected. This may cause some wear on the brake pad surface material when TCL (traction control system) is in operation and is being solicited.

Thank you for your response. So I am to assume that the other defects in the rear drive assembly; faulty rear differential that had to be replaced, and a rear strut assembly, both directly impacting the rear brakes, have nothing to do with premature wearing of the rear breaks?
