My husband and I purchased a 2012 Kia Sorento from Crain Kia in Bentonville on April 25th for $10,900. We paid in full with cash and were told we would have the title within 4-6 weeks. They said if we did not have it by then to call them. Six weeks went by and we still did not have the title. We both began calling, texting, and emailing representatives at Crain. We were told many different things, they were not always the same reason (it's in the mail, you have a lien against it, the former owner has a lien against it- none of these were true), and then eventually they stopped answering our calls. At that time, I made a complaint to the BBB. Crain finally mailed us a document that allowed us to get tags on the vehicle, even though we did not have a title. We tagged it on July 19th, the very next day. Just to receive that document took 12 weeks. At that time the BBB had contacted Crain and they said they were working on it. When we tagged the vehicle on July 19th, the DMV told us that the issue is that the former owner had a lapse in insurance coverage on the vehicle, so there was a $100 fine holding up the title that Crain would have to pay before they could get the title in order to then be able to send it to us. The DMV said, now that you have tagged it, give it 4-6 weeks for the title to come in. After that time, you need to contact Crain again because they are just not wanting to pay the $100. It has now been 6 more weeks and we still have no title. We have been calling again and at first, we were told they were finishing it up and mailing it out that week (that was 2 weeks ago). We gave it a week, called again several times with no answer. My husband finally got a hold of corporate earlier this week. They told us AGAIN that they couldn’t get the title because there was a lien on it still from the former owner’s bank. This is a 2012 vehicle and the former owner was the only owner of the vehicle before us. This vehicle was paid off and had been for a while. Back in June when I was calling about this, they said they would put notes in our file that a lien was not the issue. The DMV says a lien is not the issue, it’s the $100 fee for the previous owner not having insurance on the vehicle for one month before they traded it in to Crain. The DMV is adamant that Crain is dragging this out because they don’t want to pay the $100 fee, they want us to have to pay the fee so the title can be released. All I want is the title to this vehicle that I have already paid for in full and paid taxes on and tagged. It has been a total of 18 weeks altogether and we still cannot get a straight answer from anyone we have spoken with at Crain, whether it be people at the dealership or at their corporate office. The $100 fine is not my fault and I should not have to pay it, and I can’t imagine that $100 dollars is going to break the bank for a company like Crain Kia. Please help me get this title. They have had more than enough time to sort out this issue, whatever it actually is. Thank you.
