Unfortunately, I chose to visit J&J Beauty Supply instead of making the longer trip to a different beauty store miles away. Despite Yelp reviews warning about the owners' treatment of customers, I accepted that I might have to endure it in exchange for the convenience of shopping closer to home.Upon entering the store, the male owner closely trailed behind me. He positioned himself right beside me as I browsed the products. When I reached for an item to examine the label, he curtly remarked, "That's hair dye!" I chose to ignore his comment and continued searching for the items I needed. Once I found them, he followed me to the checkout counter.After completing my purchase and heading toward the exit, I noticed a group of young girls of color waiting to be buzzed inside the store. As I was leaving, I held the door open for them. That's when I overheard the male owner informing the girls, "18 and over only! You can't come in." I immediately turned back and inquired, "Where is that policy posted?" I scanned the store windows for any signage to that effect but found none. I repeated my question, "Where is it indicated that you must be 18 to enter?" The owner avoided eye contact and remained silent.Meanwhile, one of the girls began searching in her bag, presumably for her identification. I advised her, "You are not required to provide your ID to enter a ********************** salon. I suggest you and your friends go elsewhere." The owner continued to stay silent. The girls appeared perplexed and apprehensive. I once more encouraged them to leave and to refrain from spending their money in his store, then I walked away. Glancing back, I saw the girls departing soon after I did, indicating that they were not allowed into the store.As I read Yelp reviews, I discovered a pattern of discriminatory treatment, with numerous instances similar to the one I had just experienced. This business to be fined, sued or shut down. It's unacceptable and against the law.
