We had dropped off our 5 year old healthy beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog in July 2022 for a stay while we were on vacation. 10 days in to our trip I received a call from their trainer that he had passed. We all were beyond devastated, she said that he had a sore on his paw and they had to hold him down to look at it and after awhile he went limp. How long were they holding him down to cause his body to go limp? which is how the trainer described him. They were supposed to take care of him and keep him safe. If there was an issue they should have called me to discuss the best thing to do instead they didn't contact me at all to discuss the situation. They held him down so long he passed away. I had to give them one star to post my review but they don't deserve even one star since my dog was in their care when he passed away.

    Shamrock Ranch Kennels Response

At Shamrock Ranch, we strive to provide the best possible care to dogs of all breeds and temperaments, and we have a solid track record in doing so. Were sorry for what happened to your dog, but we feel that your account of what happened is disingenuous and want to set the record straight on what happened. For starters, you provided us with ********** and front leg braces for your healthy dog when you dropped him off for that stay in July 2022.For anyone unaware, Gabapentin is used to treat pain and for its effects as a sedative. Were unsure why you provided the leg braces but assume they were necessary for some sort of joint issues (not uncommon in large breeds), as we were instructed to keep them on throughout the day. We put them on every morning, and we took them off every evening. To insinuate that your dog had no known and OBVIOUS health issues by calling him healthy when he came to us is inaccurate. Given your dogs clear health issues, the fact your daughters dog boarded during the same time and stayed until her original intended pick-up date two full weeks after your dog passed (not to mention the fact we charged you nothing for either stay), and the fact your dog stayed with us numerous times in the past, we think its unfair and unfortunate for you to doubt our intentions in anything we do in caring for any dog.Your dog appeared to have an issue with his paw, so we examined it. You suggest in your review that we should have called you at this point, but please bear in mind that you signed a contract that gives us care, custody, and control of your dog while hes with us, and that same contract allows us to make decisions regarding the care of your dog should some abnormal situation arise. At this point, we had no reason to believe the situation was an emergency.Regarding your dogs passing during restraint as we examined his paw, were every bit as horrified as you are. Please understand that anyone present at the time of your dogs passing feels terrible about what happened. Anyone who restrained your dog was simply following safety protocol, as holding/restraining a dog is often necessary to ensure the safety of both dogs and people in various aspects of pet care. While our trainer wasnt present when your dog passed, she personally chose to contact you immediately thereafter, since she had a past relationship with you and your dog from when she trained him.Without specific information for what caused your dogs passing, we cant possibly know what could be learned from this situation to influence any changes to our protocols. Its our understanding you intended to have a necropsy performed, and wed even been advised by your vet that we were to receive an update about the results of that necropsy. We still have yet to receive any word about the results. We wont ask you to forgive us or to feel any better about our handling of the situation, but we dont feel that this lack of communication is productive. If you want to speak civilly and openly to someone here about what happened, then please get in touch with us and request to speak with a manager about it. We want to see the results of the necropsy, and we want to know how you feel we could best resolve this situation together. If we can learn anything more from this, then we want to do so.We all want some sort of closure to this situation. We wish only the best for your family and send you our deepest sympathy.

October 29, 2022 To Whom It May ********* was ****************************'s primary veterinarian. The purpose of this statement is to clear up any confusion regarding ***********************-Sauds general health, and resolve any incorrect information purported by other parties.****** was not on, nor needed any medications or devices related to pain or discomfort. Further he was healthy on his last exam, and no concerns for any serious underlying issues were observed, including any joint issues. I was the veterinarian responsible for prescribing the medication gabapentin. For the record, gabapentin was solely prescribed as an antianxiety medication, and to use in conjunction with training. Gabapentin is routinely used for this purpose, it acts quickly, allowing an as needed use, not possible with many other common antianxiety medications. As a giant breed dog, entering into a boarding situation on concrete surfaces, the recommendation of elbow pads is precautionary and customary as well. Elbow pads, obviously placed at the elbow joint, are only to protect the skin at pressure points, they do absolutely nothing to support the joint itself. Please let me know if any other professional information is needed regarding the care and health of ****************************. Thank you,*******************************, DVM
