Today, I called to inquire about commercial leasing space in **************************. Im an owner of a beauty supply and wanted to gain more information about the available space. I spoke with ********. I told ******** I was interested in leasing space and wanted to get more information. ******** stated ok, but first what type of business do you have? I told her a beauty supply store and she instantly stated she think Publixs have a restriction on business selling hair products and beauty supply stores cant be in the shopping center. I knew that was a lie, because there are several shopping centers that have Publix and a beauty supply store in them. I stated the beauty supply store wouldnt sell most nor any of the products Publix sells, since most of the beauty supply products we sell are for ethnic groups (mainly African Americans). Then, ******** switched it up and said well theres already a hair salon in the shopping center and they restrict anyone else selling hair products. The hair salon is a predominantly Caucasian salon and once again we wouldnt be selling the same products. Also, there are plenty of shopping centers that have beauty supplies and hair salons in the same facility. She then said sorry and hung up. I feel this location is purposely not trying to lease to black business owners. The place is almost empty and none of the owners are black. I was offended and will let everyone know about my experience.
