- We paid $85 to rent a boat around 9:15-9:20am on Monday, May 20th 2022. The owner, ***, told us it was $40 for 4 hours, and $15 for gas. The motor rental, I have to assume, made up the rest of the cost. He told us how to st*** the motor and we pushed off the boat dock. After about 45 minutes on *********************, we were stopped by the *** and were asked for fishing licenses, which we had, and if we had life jackets. It was our first time renting a boat in Indiana and we had no idea about life jackets, nor did the owner say anything about them. We were given a citation and told that we either had to pay the fine ($130+), or go to court. We cant go to court because the citation is in my boyfriends name and he started a new job and cannot take off. We went back to Baitmasters and explained what happened. ***s son noticed a pontoon full of people rented out by Baitmasters, without life jackets, and acknowledged to me and my boyfriend that theyll probably get stopped and ticketed too. We went inside and *** started to say he handed us life jackets, but stopped himself and said theyre available to rent for $5 a piece. We said we didnt want to go back out, and asked if we could get the 3 hours worth of money back since we were only out for an hour. He said The minimum is 4 hours. You can grab life jackets and go back out there and refused any type of refund. We didnt want to go back out on the lake because at that point we didnt trust him or want to continue to do business with him. The refund would have been $63.75. The attached receipt shows $110 because we also purchased 2 dozen large minnows and 3 packs of leaders at the shop.
