Galloway Construction & Restoration, Inc. Response

    06/09/2023

Ms. ************************* contacted ** during the pandemic to complete an insurance job that was started by a different contractor whom she was unhappy with. We explained to her how busy we were, but we were willing to come take a look to see if there were some parts of the job we could help her with. We went the same day she called to do a scope of the work and found that the job was not far enough along that we would be able to help her in a timely fashion. When we called the same day to inform her that we would not be able to take on this project, her response was to hang up on us. Approximately a year and half later she contacted ** once again due to being unsatisfied with another contractor.  She informed us her insurance company had authorized $8,910.00 to construct a landing and steps which have been bid by a previous contractor. She further informed us the insurance company would allow for extra monies if needed since it was now going to be bid by a different contractor. After reviewing her paperwork, we set up to meet on Thursday, May 25, 2023. Upon arrival she instructed us to go to the back of the house where the work was to be performed, at which time she informed us she was only willing to spend $7,000.00 as she did not want to pay her deductible. She also said she had already ordered aluminum stringers for her steps (which would be an upgrade and significantly more expensive). We asked her what size she purchased at which point she responded to the number of steps, we asked her who performed the measurements to determine the length at which point she responded this was the maximum steps available for these stringers. We informed her as to the stipulations for code on steps and to the fact the stringers, landings and all structures must be calculated to fall within the proper codes. We further instructed her that we would have to look into the attachment methods, construction, etc., for the use of these stringers at which point she started to become upset and told us it did not matter as this is what she wants and all she needs is someone to do the work as she wants it performed. In response we informed her that we were leaving and not interested in performing this work, at which point she said something in reference to our race and/or color and informed ** that she is a nurse practitioner and we were lazy and the vehicle we were driving was ugly. She further complained that no contractors were willing to help her to which we responded it may be your expletive attitude.
We in no way were rude to this potential customer at our previous meeting or at this meeting until we were referred to in a very disrespectful manner.
We in no way mentioned her race, color, etc., in a positive or negative way, however, with our two meetings with her she has been extremely rude by #1 hanging up on us and #2 speaking to us derogatorily and making fun of the vehicle we drove.
It is well within the rights of a contractor to turn down work for any reason and definitely for good reason due to racism and or belittling.
We have performed work for insurance companies for the last 30 years and understand her frustration as not all contractors understand how insurance restoration work is handled as it is a very time consuming and paper intensive process which generally takes much longer than a regular construction project. We however were not the cause of the original claim nor did we perform any work therefore we feel we have done nothing wrong but were still nevertheless at the blunt end of her frustration.
