Put everything you want in writing and make him sign a contract with you.

I trusted him to do right and listen to what we wanted for our kitchen remodel. I said I was flexible. He used that against me and ordered contractor grade cabinets stock cabinets from ***** without consulting me that the options I asked for weren't available. I trusted that he found exactly what I asked for when he said the cabinets were in. We demo'd our old kitchen. Had I known that he cheaped out on us, I wouldn't have taken out our old kitchen.

We were backed into a corner and taken advantage of. Sure, I could have stopped the work but it would have forced my family to go without a kitchen for only God knows how long. With Graduations, Anniversaries, and milestone birthdays coming up, that wasn't an option.

What is worse, he has no eye for detail. He couldn't understand why we wanted the cabinet handles to be even. He fixed the worst instances by filling the holes with putty while I have to live with the others. He thought we were crazy when we said the cabinets should be flush with each other. He thought it wasn't a problem to use shelf brackets instead of countertop brackets for the 13 inch overhang granite bar. He didn't know how to fill the gaps between the wall and cabinets.

My husband will be making all repairs that he was incapable of doing correctly. I no longer trusted him to do the work correctly. I just wanted him out of my house and never return. Had he done a good job, we have many projects that we would have hired him for but he ruined any chance of that.

I wasn't expecting the best of the best but I did expect professional quality products and workmanship. I got DIY quality products and workmanship. At a distance, it looks a lot better but don't look up close at the detail.

I wanted to hire a "professional" to do the job better and faster than we could have done it on our own. I should have hired someone else.
