OWNES CORNING SELLS CLASS 4 SHINGLES THAT ARE advertised to a very high impact resistance and they charge for those shingles accordingly. with a lifetime warranty. I submitted a claim for damage to their shingles a few days ago which showed significant damage to those shingles after 11 yrs of use. The damage was done by very small hail less than a dime in size. They are refusing to accept this claim dues to hail damage and my home has no attic ventilation since it is has foam insulation keeping the attic 80 degrees (not 110 degrees).. Most of the shingle damage was on the roofing above the porch and no ventilation would ever be required there anyway. A class 4 roof is required to withstand a 2" steel ball dropped multiple times from 20 ft. it should be able to easily withstand hail less than a dime in size..They also state they do not want to pay for the damage due to my insurance co paying for this roof when i will still be paying for the high deductible while an increase in my rate will soon follow.I have completed all their required documents and sent in all the required photos and expect them to pay this claim like any reputable company would do.

      Business response

      08/22/2022

Owens Corning’s Limited Warranty on Roofing shingles states that we will cover all manufacturing defects that affect the performance of the roof. This warranty does not cover any problems with non-defective shingles caused by conditions or handling beyond our control such as inadequate ventilation, or “Acts of God” such as hail damage. We regret the consumer’s dissatisfaction with the terms of the warranty and resolution.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because I think it rather ironic that this company can claim the highest rating of a shingle (UL2218 Class 4) which would mean it has to pass those high standards in a lab for them to sell them as such.  That Class 4 standard means that you are well protected against extreme weather such as hail storms---per below.  They charge us a higher cost for that class of shingles and yet when damage is done by that same hail they say they don't cover it since its an act of god (as is any and every weather act).  Their own literature for this very shingle shows hail in highlighting its durability (attached).while also stating in that literature that it MEETS THE HIGHEST STANDARD FOR IMPACT RESISTANCE!!!!!!!!!!

Their other claim is that there was no ventilation but as I previously stated, most of the damage was done above the porch areas which would certainly not be a ventilated roof area.  They also never stated anywhere on their warranty that your warranty is void due to having a foamed insulated house.  Millions of homes have foam and it is now the preferred way to insulate home in many regions of the US.  As I previously stated, if the ventilation was an issue, there would be more damage on the main house and not above the porched areas.

Owens Corning is supposed to be a reputable company which stands behind their products.  Not a company that hides behind unjust excuses for them refusing to fulfill their commitments to the buying public.

WHAT DOES CLASS 4 MEAN----(The cost of Class 4 impact resistant shingles can vary from company to company, but if you take the time to search, you will find that many companies offer UL Class 4 impact resistant roof options that are reasonably priced. In some instances asphalt shingles are affordable and Class 4 impact resistant, however they do have drawbacks. It is important to note that the price you pay for a Class 4 roof will mean your home or building is well protected from extreme weather events like hail storms.)

      to me, ****

Good talking to you this morning ********.

I have included the promo literature showing hail in highlighting the benefits of this class 4 shingle.  I have installed the same shingle again since they appeared to have a warranty against hail damage.  I paid a premium for those class 4 shingles.  I could find nothing in their warranty that says they will not cover hail damage on a class 4 shingle.  If they did, no one would buy their shingles since the possibility of hail exists throughout the US….

I will settle for nothing less than 50% of the material cost of the newly installed weatherguard shingles.  They should be paying for 100% of the material cost.

Thanks again for your time this morning..

I am sorry Mr. ******* is disappointed by the response to his inquiry in connection with the Owens Corning Roofing & Asphalt Limited Warranty on Roofing Shingles. I want to assure you that we value our customers and their satisfaction.  We take pride in providing a warranty on our roofing products that is among the strongest in the industry. Our warranty states under the section "What Is Not Covered" section 1: "Acts of God, such as hail..." and section 6: inadequate ventilation are not covered. The warranty does not cover any problems with nondefective shingles caused by external conditions or handling beyond our control.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:  This company is clearly marketing their product (as depicted in the attached brochure) that will handle some hail and there is a picture of hail.   This picture does not have a big red X over the hail which would let everyone know there is no hail coverage, it just shows you hail.  On the back of that brochure (that I kept in a file the very day I bought those shingles 11 yrs ago), there is no mention in the details of the Class 4 Weatherguard shingles that there is no hail coverage---on the contrary--it states that they "have been engineered to face Mother Nature's worst and still look their best".  They then state "Meets the highest standard for impact resistance: UL 2218, Class 4".

So Owens now wants go use some fine print not mentioned in their promo literature to say they never intended to cover hail period.  While this is convenient for them to refer to when a warranty claim comes in, the bottom line is Owens Corning is using false advertising to promote their Weatherguard Class 4 shingle and charging a premium for it.

I will settle for nothing less than 50% reimbursement of the shingles recently purchased to replace the damaged ones.

If this is not received within 10 days, I will form a class action lawsuit which will include a significant # of the homeowners who have filed a warranty claim dealing with hail and been denied.   I know 2 lawyers who will accept this suit on a contingency fee arrangement.  This will not cost me a dime but will cost you millions.   I am a retired angry old man with nothing better to do.

So the ball is in your court.  Give me your previous response to this claim and I assure you that this will end my claim with BBB.  You will then be dealing with the class action suit.

      Sincerely,

**** ******* (angry retired old man)

Upon investigation, this warranty claim was settled within the terms of the warranty in place at the time the material was installed. We have examined the information that was provided and determined that the shingles are free from any manufacturing defects that would cause a roof to leak.  Shingles do not have the ability to leak as they are not permeable nor can they hold water. After careful review of the information submitted, we determined the concern on the roof to be algae. The settlement for algae coverage is to have the shingles cleaned and can be referenced in the Algae Coverage portion of your warranty.

Contacted roofers about roof installed on my fathers home in 2017. They came out and saw the deterioration of shingles. The pattern stated defective shingles. Owens’s Corning requested a sample only to state it tested in their lab for bird droppings no defect. I asked for a live inspection they said no representatives were available. I’d like a refund to get the roof repaired or replaced with another brand. First they didn’t believe ownership , then bird droppings, then it extending from shingle to shingle so it had to be an outside source. Knowing now what I know about Owens Corning’s backing I would have never chose their product.

I am sorry *** ****** is disappointed by the response to his inquiry in connection with the Owens Corning Roofing & Asphalt Limited Warranty on Roofing Shingles. I want to assure you that we value our customers and their satisfaction.  We have examined the information that was provided and determined that the shingles did not show signs of a manufacturing defect. The granule voids on the shingles are caused by bird droppings. These contain ammonium hydroxide, which reacts with the asphalt in the shingle, breaking down the bonds and causing the asphalt to lose its adhesive properties. This is part of roof maintenance and not covered under the Owens Corning warranty.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because: if bird droppings caused this extent of damage the home with the same roof different color we had installed the same year would have the same problems. Finding traces of bird droppings would be on every installed shingle they test and just an excuse not to cover a defective run of shingles. It’s not possible the entire roof has been afflicted by damage from bird droppings in a short period of time. It’s not a maintenance issue when the roof was purchased and installed in 2017. They refuse to actually send out a representative to look at the roof. Stating they don’t have to. The roofers and contractors agree it’s a defective shingle. While it doesn’t happen often it does happen and to make a warranty claim against defects and not cover it is extremely decisive and will not be purchasing any more Owens Corning products if they don’t correct their mishap of shingles. I understand things go wrong with products that’s why theirs warranty’s. Having jumped through hoops they give out false claims stating bird droppings caused the fiberglass to be exposed. They make a claim this roof will last x amount of years and doesn’t even make it through 4 years and has to be replaced. I’ve requested a refund so I can have another roof installed which isn’t going to happen.

      Sincerely,

      *********** ******

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because: Bird droppings are every shingle in the world. This is a failed Owens Corning product that’s very probable been failed since installed. My father just passed but had health problems that limited him from inspecting sooner than 4 years. A roof with this kind of damage must be replaced, it was not caused by birds some most flaking is larger than my hand. That is a ridiculous claim to not fix their defective product. We have the same roof installed next door, same year, more trees = more birds… zero problems…. It’s unfortunate a bad batch comes down the line but it happens and it needs to be taken care of or don’t make claims of a warranty. I’m not one of the people making claims my roof didn’t last 40 -50 years like the company says because I know I will not. But I’ve never had one fail in this short of time.

Owens Corning (hereafter referred to as the company) is refusing service on a roof installed with its products in March of 2021. The reasoning for this refusal is a provision within its terms and conditions that requires a warranty of roofing materials to be transferred by the owner of a house within 60 days of a real estate transaction. This requirement from the company is both arbitrary and specifically designed to take advantage of new homeowners. The company is aware that purchasing a new home is exciting and often complicated for new homeowners, however the company has positioned itself to prey upon and take advantage of these consumers. The products installed on this roof (duration series roof shingles) have begun leaking due to a manufacturing defect. Although the entire roof is less than 14 months old, it has essentially been deemed unworthy of the company's standards of workmanship and craft. This is of course attributable to a technical provision of legalese buried within the companies fine print. It is a wholly unethical way of conducting ones business and appears to only to protect the company from the poor quality of its own products.

      Business response

      05/26/2022

We have carefully reviewed the information you submitted and checked our records. We have no record of a warranty transfer for this address.
Our warranty states that for a warranty to be transferred, the homeowner must contact 1-800-ROOFING within sixty (60) days after the date of the real estate transfer to obtain the benefits of this warranty. Proof of purchase of the Owens Corning® shingles and the installation date must be submitted at the same time. If the warranty is not properly transferred as described, the shingles are no longer covered under warranty. Since a transfer was not done in accordance with the terms of the warranty in this case, there is no warranty on these shingles.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

The company is simply repeating their terms and conditions that I am objecting to in the first place. There has been no 'careful review', and the assertion that there has been is laughable. The company maintains a position explicitly to take advantage of new homeowners. This is a displaceable practice and is far outside the bounds of what would be considered honest and moral. This company is preying on less informed consumers and new homeowners through obscured language hidden in clauses many homeowners aren't even aware of. The roof shingles, as I have noted before, are 14 months old. These shingles do nothing but sit on a roof. The declaration that they have no warranty due to an arbitrary process equivalent to that of an animal jumping through hoops, is far from the bounds of what would be considered an honest and reputable business. The company does not stand on the laurels of its own building materials and obfuscates its responsibility with legalese and arbitrary small print. Despicable.

Middle creek roofing installed a new roof on above address and State Farm home-owners paid for the claim as damage by hail. Middle creek sold Owens cornings tru- definition duration shingles which included a 50 year preferred warranty ***************** in 6/2018. Middle creek roofing placed a claim for warranty claim number #******** on 1/3/2022. Owen cornings gave middle creek roofing horrible times as they kept telling middle creek the claim info wasn't correct even though middle creek roof took shingles twice off the roof and made multiple trips to writers home for pictures. Writer found that roof on garage and around dormers had a discolored look, these shingles were supposed to have a 10 year warranty against algae growth (streak guard protection) because such shingles have a compound in the shingle itself. roof technician josh from middle creek roofing said he found black type mold on multiple shingles back/front roof when he did a inspection. roof was only 3.5 years old. Owen cornings immediately denied such claim even before having shingles in their possession. Middle creek did send the shingles, and again Owen cornings BRAD, stated all 3 letters and ignored writer on email, even though writer home was in dead of winter and less 20f temperature, Brad from Owens corning said discoloration is moss or pollen. the area on the roof is not clumpy green moss or was there pollen in the air, as we are in dead of winter. The only reason state farm home owners paid the more expensive roof material because of the Owen corning warranty. I've enclosed pictures, denial letters, and warranty. 3.5 year roof should NOT be discoloring with black mold. Owen corning did not release any type of lab documents, photos or etc. Brad, released the same info on 3 different letters and did not want bothered by the writer. the black mold clearly  is not pollen or moss, its just Owen corning way out of not covering their defective product and not covering there streak guard protection

In response to the claimants comments in regards to the belief that there is Algae on their roof. A review of the submitted samples reveals that they have a discoloration that is not algae/fungus.  Algae/fungus typically has a brown to black appearance and may be mistaken for soot, dirt, moss, or tree droppings.  The submitted samples/pictures have a greenish cast, such as when moss or pollen is present.  Moss or pollen discoloration easily washes off with soap and water. Algae Resistant (AR) shingles are not resistant to pollen, moss type growths.

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:  the pictures submitted clearly show a black discoloration and pictures were provided to BBB.   Owen Cornings do not stand by their 50- year warranty and 10- year streak guard warranty.  I am not the only consumer that complains Owen Cornings DENY WARRANTY.   The shingles purchased were Tru definition Duration  shingle, higher standard shingle that the State Farm Home Owners paid for.   I had other roofing contractors look at the roof, and they too agreed as Middlecreek Roofing agreed 3 year and half year roof , should stand up to weather and not discolor.   A roof with the Tru definition duration shingle, should perform better and clearly shows the shingles are defective but Owen Cornings won't stand behind their product!!  So Owen Cornings sells a high dollar product, that doesn't meet industry standard as they claim to the consumer, and then it falls on the consumer who was sold the more expensive shingle only to have a ugly looking roof only after 3.5 years old.    I really hope a class action evolves on Owen Cornings not covering their product as stated when the shingle doesn't perform as stated in writing.

      Sincerely,

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:  Owen Cornings continues to imply my roof has pollen or moss.   Roof DID NOT  have pollen when pictures and samples were taken in 01/2022, as we had snow, some of the pictures supplied by the Roofing Company  were not accepted by Owen Cornings, due  to snow on roof.   The roof is not affected by moss, as moss is green and clumpy.  Pictures clearly show black streaks, there is no such green clumpy material on roof.  This is  Owen Cornings not standing behind their upgraded Tru-definition Duration Shingles, that do NOT hold up to their 10 year streak guard warranty.   Owen Cornings provided the same denial statements on all 3 letters different dates, even after they received the shingle samples from the  Roofing Company.   Roofing  Company nor this writer was provided any type of  lab report found the shingles.   The shingles effected by the mold/algae should fall under the streak guard warranty and be replaced.  But instead of Owen Cornings, standing behind their upgraded shingle, they simply DO NOT!  I hope more consumers realize this, and do not buy Owen Cornings shingles.  I will allow my complaint concerning this company be listed on the BBB website    as Anonymous.

      Sincerely,

On 3/7/2022, I called the Owens Corning Roofing number to file a claim under my home roof's warranty. I have the paperwork with the warranty number on it. We were told when we bought the home in 2015 that the roof had a warranty on it and if we ever had an issue to call the company with the registration number. That day had come after a windstorm. When I called the company, they said the warranty was under a different name and because it was not transferred, there is nothing they can do for me. I told them nobody said anything to me after purchasing the home that the warranty needed to be transferred. We were just told to contact the company. I don't understand I was transferred to somebody named ***** who is one of their "leaders." He said they didn't want to put me through the time of having the roof inspected than to be denied because of the claim transfer. I told them again nothing was communicated to me about the need for a transfer and how can this still apply to me when I was never told and that this wasn't fair. They still were not trying to help me. I asked to speak to somebody from corporate. ***** said that *** who is the warranty manager of the home office would call me back at 12:00pm on 3/7. She called back with no solution to the problem. She said that because the date has passed, the warranty is no longer in effect. I told her that up until me calling for help, Owens Corning has the warranty in effect and on file. Just because I called and I'm the new owner with the paperwork, now they are saying it won't work. This is not fair and predatory. I want my warranty that was purchased with the home and my roof fixed under their warranty. They could have easily taken my information to help me but refused to do so. Again, I was penalized for calling and asking for help.

In response to the claimants comments, the Owens Corning Limited Warranty on Roofing Shingles states that warranty can be transferred one time anytime during the life of the warranty. For this warranty to be transferred, the new owner must complete and return a warranty transfer card within 60 days after the date of the real estate transfer to obtain benefits of the warranty. Since this information was submitted outside of the warranty terms, Owens Corning is unable to transfer the warranty per the terms of the warranty transferability requirements.
